New Carrier Ethernet Specifications plus Professional Certification Address Key Issues in Burgeoning APAC Market
Speaking at the recent NetEvents 2011 APAC Press & Analyst Summit in Thailand, MEF President Nan Chen outlined the proceedings of the MEF’s last quarterly meeting for 2011, held in Singapore last month, and their particular relevance for APAC business. Key issues for the region include Carrier Ethernet Multiple Classes of Service (Multi-CoS), Ethernet mobile backhaul, and the rise of wholesale Ethernet services – and all three issues were addressed by new technical specifications progressed at the Quarterly meeting. He also announced strong support for the new MEF Carrier Ethernet Certified Professional (CECP) certification program, which is already boosting the skills availability in a highly competitive market. Nan Chen explained how the letter ballot acceptance of the MEF’s Phase 2 on Multi-CoS and Mobile Backhaul Implementation Agreements – extending MEF 23 and MEF 22 respectively – is an especially important issue for the region where, without a strong legacy network of fixed line connections, it is doubly attractive to leapfrog traditional leased line connections from cell cites to core network and go for an all-Ethernet solution. According to Infonetics’ Michael Howard: “IP/Ethernet MBH is the universally accepted solution to lower the costs of growing mobile data traffic, and to facilitate migration to next generation all-IP/Ethernet networks. This two Implementation Agreements will be especially welcome for addressing explosive growth of mobile Internet traffic, as well as pointing the way to simpler 4G migration.”

MEF to certify Carrier Ethernet professionals
The Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) is introducing a professional certification programme for individuals working with the Carrier Ethernet standard.
Kevin Vachon, the MEF's chief operating officer, said: "We believe this will help enable the growth of the industry."
The Forum already has a certification programme which verifies that equipment and service providers conform to its specifications. The professional certification carries this approach forward to individuals working with the wide-area version of the Ethernet standard.
The first qualification that the MEF will offer is for a Carrier Ethernet Certified Professional, which will apply to someone with the right level of knowledge to correctly represent the standard in pre-sales and sales situations. Within a year, according to Vachon, MEF wants to develop more technical qualifications, including for a Carrier Ethernet Certified Engineer, and a Carrier Ethernet Applications Specialist.
The MEF is currently authorising organisations to offer training courses that will prepare individuals to pass written exams covering Carrier Ethernet technology and service fundamentals from an applications perspective. If they pass the exams they will get a certificate and will be listed in a directory of MEF certified professionals, posted on the MEF and EthernetAcademy.net websites.
"With extensive Carrier Ethernet infrastructure now in place, the CECP program targets technical sales and marketing professionals that are key to monetising these assets with new services and accelerating growth in our industry," said Vachon.
The new programme should be available in the second quarter.

MEF uruchamia program wydawania certyfikatów Carrier Ethernet
MEF (Metro Ethernet Forum) rozszerza program certyfikacji i inicjuje program CECP (Carrier Ethernet Professional Certification), adresowany zarówno do indywidualnych użytkowników, jak i do firm telekomunikacyjnych. MEF będzie wydawać certyfikaty potwierdzające wiedzę ekspercką w zakresie technologii Carrier Ethernet.
Forum rozpoczęło swoją działalność w 2005 r., wspierając i promując platformę Carrier Ethernet. Nowy program wydawania certyfikatów wychodzi naprzeciw rosnącemu zainteresowaniu tą technologią i coraz większej liczbie wdrożeń instalacji sieciowych wykorzystujących ją - szczególnie w firmach telekomunikacyjnych.
