The new Cisco ME3600X and ME3800X platforms (a.k.a. “Whales”) are designed for the next Generation Carrier Ethernet access and aggregation. Robust, cost efficient and highly manageable Metro Ethernet Carrier Ethernet capable products in a compact 1 RU format supporting full MPLS functionality (L2VPN and L3VPN, TE, FRR, …), Ethernet VC infrastructure, E-OAM.  It is extremely scalable for its compact size (256k Mac Address, 8000 Bridge Domain, 16,000 Pseudowires, 32,000 queues), and is also ready for mobile backhaul thanks to its support for SyncE.  Uplinks can be 1 GE or 10GE.  Finally the power consumption is very efficient (1.5W/Gbps typical).

Based on interest Cisco believes this platform will likely be a major hit.  It indeed allows to extend carrier Ethernet functionality to smaller remote sites, in a cost efficient manner.

Cisco’s overall architecture for Carrier Ethernet System is explained in the following video.

10:10 AM -- Carrier Ethernet exchanges are emerging as a hot topic at the upcoming Ethernet Expo Americas 2010 on Nov. 2 and 3. Under the leadership of Carrier Ethernet rock star Nan Chen, the CENX Inc. (www.cenx.com)  team pioneered the concept of the Ethernet services exchange and became the first company to open its exchange for business in late 2009. In his role as the MEF’s president and board director, Nan will be giving an Expo keynote progress report on “Carrier Ethernet Globalization” during the morning of Nov. 3. His colleague, CENX CTO Chris Purdy, will be participating in the following session on the same day: “Carrier Ethernet Exchanges – The Catalyst for Market Growth.”

Below are highlights of a Q&A discussion that I had this week with Nan in his role as the president of CENX:
