Lack of awareness is stifling Ethernet adoptionThe Ethernet market may be growing but there is still a lack in awareness in some markets
keeping it from wider scale adoption.

Ethernet is growing at a very rapid rate in the business space but awareness of the technology
is still preventing it taking hold of many markets.

This was the belief of Kevin Vachon, chief operating officer of the Metro Ethernet Forum
(MEF), who claimed eyes needed to be opened across the globe to this technology.

“There are countries where the competitive pressures are such that [companies] are not
aggressively pursuing these new service development initiatives [with] China as an example,”
he said when IT PRO spoke with him at this year's NetEvents in Istanbul.

“The markets aren't aware of Ethernet in general [and] the service providers with the
regulatory environment are not forced to move too quickly. We have seen that in other places
like Germany, so I think that is probably the big issue.”

Recently we published an article sent to us from Neutral Tandem.  It was a joint paper by Neutral Tandem and Cisco on the challenges and benefits of Ethernet Exchanges.   The original article entitled "Fast Forward to Ethernet Exchange Networks" can be view here.

Further to article, three points, or key factors are highlighted in an add-on article by Mike Capuano at Cisco.   The three questions are as follows:

1. Does the operator take a network-based approach to extend its reach?

The network-based approach is critical to making it easier to offer Ethernet services.

2. Can it provide a personalized service portal?

The user portals should make it easier to connect, be personalized to show such
relationships in the network like: buildings, cell towers, etc that are "on network"

IKT-Norge starter Ethernet-forum

Ethernet.
