Q&A: CENX - Carrier Ethernet Exchange

10:10 AM -- Carrier Ethernet exchanges are emerging as a hot topic at the upcoming Ethernet Expo Americas 2010 on Nov. 2 and 3. Under the leadership of Carrier Ethernet rock star Nan Chen, the CENX Inc. (www.cenx.com)  team pioneered the concept of the Ethernet services exchange and became the first company to open its exchange for business in late 2009. In his role as the MEF’s president and board director, Nan will be giving an Expo keynote progress report on “Carrier Ethernet Globalization” during the morning of Nov. 3. His colleague, CENX CTO Chris Purdy, will be participating in the following session on the same day: “Carrier Ethernet Exchanges – The Catalyst for Market Growth.”

Below are highlights of a Q&A discussion that I had this week with Nan in his role as the president of CENX:

Heavy Reading: Over the past six or seven years, you personally have done a tremendous job in evangelizing the benefits of Carrier Ethernet network solutions and services. Ethernet services are now offered by more than 500 providers worldwide, but there are still a lot of customers out there who have not yet taken full advantage of the technology. What are some of the key challenges you see that could be impeding faster and more widespread adoption of Carrier Ethernet services, and what is CENX doing to address these challenges?

Worldwide sales of Carrier Ethernet access platforms rose 11 percent to $1.02 billion in 2009 according to Heavy Reading.   In their new Carrier Ethernet Access Platform (CEAP) Quarterly Market Tracker, Heavy Reading is projecting the global CEAP market to increase at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16.6% from 2009 to 2013, approaching $1.89 billion by 2013.

CEAP platforms include: Ethernet over fiber demarcation platforms and access switches, Ethernet over bonded copper pair (G.shdsl and MIMO on DMT) solutions, and Ethernet over TDM access circuit products.

Heavy Reading expects each of the CEAP sub-segments experience double-digit CAGR through 2013 while revenue growth for Ethernet over fiber and Ethernet over bonded copper pair platforms will outpace revenue growth for Ethernet over TDM access circuit products.

Carrier Ethernet Access Poised for Solid growth through 2013

Worldwide sales of copper-based carrier Ethernet access platforms rose 42 percent year-over-year to $266 million in the rolling four-quarter period ending in 1Q09.  These Copper-based CEAP platforms include Ethernet-over-bonded copper pair (G.shdsl and MIMO on DMT) and Ethernet-over-TDM access circuit solutions.

"Many service providers who collectively spent billions of dollars deploying carrier Ethernet/MPLS-based network infrastructure during 2006-2008 are now increasingly shifting their attention to adding low-cost copper- and fiber-based Ethernet endpoints to their networks," said industry analyst Stan Hubbard.  (a Senior Analyst for Ethernet Academy).

"In 1Q09, global E-o-bonded copper pair platform sales grew slightly quarter-over-quarter, while E-o-TDM access circuit and E-o-fiber access platform revenues dipped only modestly on a sequential basis. This stands in sharp contrast to the double-digit sequential revenue declines we saw for carrier Ethernet switches and routers that sit further back in the network."
