Hi,

I’d like to start a discussion on MPLS-TP.

Hoping to get feedback on the direction that IETF & ITU-T is going
And how likely do you think that this will be used as the transport technology for Carrier Ethernet.

Hei Ayal, can you share about whats the progress on IETF/ITU-T on T-MPLS, is it gonna be the ultimate transport technoloogy replacing the legacy now?.

Hi Toni,

T-MPLS isn't being used anymore.
MPLS-TP which is now under the MPLS working group in IETF is standardized in cooperation with ITU-T (different people would rate this cooperation differently, but I won't get into this).
The basic stuff is already specified in several RFCs.
There is a lot of work going on in the areas of OAM, protection, multicast support, etc.

The jury are still out on the question of whether or not MPLS-TP would pick up as a leading transport technology.

My 2 cents,
Ayal

Hi,

I am interested in the relationship between MPLS TP and MPLS TE. Are there any changes that take place between TP and TE. When a frame goes from TP to TE and maybe back to TP is there anything added or remove from the label or does it stay the same.

Thanks
Michael

Hi Michael,

I assume that you are asking about a scenario where you have 2 networks, one operated using MPLS-TE and the other operated using MPLS-TP.
From data-plane perspective, these would look the same.
Of course, each network and each link can have different label values, but the packets look exactly the same.

They behave differently with regards to provisioning, OAM, etc.

My 2 cents,
Ayal

Thanks Ayal,

MPLS TP does it not work at the transport layer i.e ATM layer.

MPLS TE is this at layer 2/3

Why two separate networks?
