Is MPLS VPWS are requirement for interconnects? 2 Years, 9 Months ago

I see some possibly confusing information about interconnects. Is MPLS a requirement for interconnecting service providers? Is it a common denominator since ENNI had not been available until recently? Or is ENNI another layer above(?) MPLS. I see some information that suggests MPLS Virtual Private Wire Service (VPWS) is a requirement and that ENNI runs on top of MPLS. Where does this fit into service provider interconnects in general and how does this relate to what the MEF says about "Global Interconnect"
Thanks in advance

Peter,
The E-NNI implementation, as defined in the MEF26, uses IEEE 802.1ad frame format (S-tag VLAN IDs are used to differentiate between individual services at the E-NNI). MPLS is not required.

Peter,
Some MENs use MPLS as the underlying technology.
Please remember that MEF does not specify the MEN internal technology.
One can realize MEN using MPLS, and in such a case VPWS is a common mechanism to implement E-Line services.
One can also use IEEE QinQ or MACinMAC
The interconnect is where one technology ends and a second one starts.
Usually you will terminate the MPLS LSP when you cross domains, as you do not want to coordinate labels and LSPs between operators.
