TOPIC: AccessEVC/EVC/EPL service Ethertype
#875
AccessEVC/EVC/EPL service Ethertype 1 Year, 6 Months ago Karma: 0
Folks,

When configuring a port-based EVC between two switches, I set the UNI to the first switch with a 0x8100 ether type, then the links between the two switches to an ether type of 0x88a8 and the UNI on the far end to 0x8100.

Some people have advised that I need not doing this to remain MEF compliant.

However, my take is that in order for a protocol sniffer to the the EVC as a PB traffic, the ether type has to be 0x88a8.

So am I just being more uptight than otherwise necessary here ?

Francois,

If I understand your scenario, you have two switches
Each having a UNI port that accepts C-tag from the UNI-C on ingress and sends C-tag to the UNI-c on egress.
Each switch also has an I-NNI (internal port).
So you have standard UNI and your CEN happens to be PB, which is perfectly fine.
The frame format inside the CEN can be whatever you chose, MEF doesn't specify this.

As long as you provide the CE-VLAN ID preservation required by EPL, your service setting seems to be MEF 9 compliant.

Allright, MEF does not require 0x88a8 as an ether type on PB traffic.

Some have said that I'm chasing for trouble as several switches are not capable of dealing with a 0x88a8 ether type for the SVLAN.

However, mine are. So I feel that I'm doing it right by doing 0x88a8 on SVLAN frames.

I believe you do.
Following IEEE specificationss is the right way to go.

My 2 cents,
